Colored Gem Stones |
There are a large variety of colored gem stones that are used in all types of jewelry. Proper identification and an accurate description of each of the following elements are critical to establishing value.
Type of Gem Stone(s): Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald, Aquamarine, Topaz, etc.
Shape of the Stone(s): Round, Oval, Marquis, Emerald, etc.
Number of Stone(s): The actual number of stones in the jewelry item.
Weight of Stone(s): Measurement in Carats or Total Carat Weight (TCW) for items containing multiple stones is preferred.
Clarity of Stone(s): Ideally reflected by the type of mineral using GIA terms and the GIA grading scale for colored gem stones. Less desirable terms include "heavily", "slightly" or "moderately" included.
Color of Stone(s): Color is ideally reflected by using the GIA color grading scale for colored gem stones. Color may also commonly reflected in terms such as "intense", "light", "dark", "translucent", "medium", etc.
With colored gem stones, color is usually the most important factor for evaluation and is responsible for up to 50% of the value. Clarity is the secondary component, worth approximately 30% of the value. The balance of value is made up of a combination of the weight of the stone and the cut (shape).
