Pearls |
The quality and value of pearls vary greatly based on the type, ie: Cultured, South Sea, Fresh Water, etc. Jewelers who know and understand how to value pearls are much less common than those who can do the same for other types of jewelry.
The following points are important for providing an accurate description, determining current value and replacement cost.
Length: In inches (including number of pearls). The most common lengths for uniform pearl strands are: Choker, 14-16 in.; Princess, usually 18 in.; Matinee, 20-24 in.; Opera, 28-30 in.; Rope/ sautoir/lariat, anything longer than opera (usually 31-47 in.).
Size In Millimeters: 3mm. to 8 mm. are the most popular.
Color: Rose, white or cream are most common.
Luster: Low, medium or high normally used.
Clarity: From virtually free of flaws to slightly spotted, visible to naked eye.
Clasp: Type (fishhook, ornate) and metal (10K, 14K, 18K or goldfilled). Type: Natural, cultured or fresh water. Brand Name If Known: i.e. Mikimoto
PEARL SIZING: The most important factor in determining value. |
