Custom Designed Jewelry |
Custom designed jewelry is among the most difficult to appraise, assess value and replace. Some of the elements of a custom piece can be quantified (ie: a primary diamond, colored gem stone, karat and weight of gold, etc.).But like a work of art, much of the value of custom jewelry is determined by the unique nature of owning a one-of-a-kind piece. Can the original designer recreate the piece? How old is the piece? Do the molds for casting a replacement exist, or must they be recreated? These are all critical questions in determining value and replacement cost.
The process of creating or recreating a custom piece of jewelry is as follows:
Preliminary Sketch: First, a GJR designer will sit down with the client and complete a drawing, or sketch of the piece to be replaced. Photographs of the specific item are invaluable as reference points to do this, along with input from the client.
Finished Drawing: Once the preliminary sketches are completed, a finished, inked drawing is completed, indicating size and dimensions, for the client’s approval. This drawing will then go to the model maker for construction.
Wax Modeling: From the finished drawing, the model maker will make a wax model to the exact size, dimension and detail of the piece to be finished.
Casting: From the client approved wax model, a mold is made and the jewelry is cast in gold or platinum. The rough casting is then shown to the client for approval.
Setting Stones: The piece is then set with the appropriate size, quantity and quality of diamonds or colored gem stones.
Finishing: The item is then polished and finished into the client’s custom piece! |
